I know growing up my grandma only used cast iron and the way she would clean it was she would put a little water in the pan and then put it on the stove and let it come to a boil. The hot water would remove everything and then she would rinse it off and dry it right away and put it up. She still has the cast iron that her grandma used. Hoefully I will inheirt it one day to add ot my collection. Also great video, I am learning a lot about homesteading. This is something my fmaily want to do within the next few years.

Re: Coffee Cake Recipe From Scratch

Becky, I loved your coffee cake--delicious!!! I let my two does raise their babies until the babies are 10 to 12 weeks old, Then I pull the babies and put them in a seperate pen. I milk the does once a day - getting between 3/4 and 2 gallons of milk, depending on how far into the lactaion period we are. This works really well for our busy schedule. One year I did not have a buck so we milked our does for 26 months without rebreeding.

Re: Coffee Cake Recipe From Scratch

Hi Becky, coffee cake looks yummy. We have a small homestead, and never can imagine ever moving back near town/city again. You stay constantly working on it, but, you never get bored, especially with all the animals. One thing though, the way we approach it ~ started out with 1 breed of animal at a time and got them established before going to next breed =cats-fixed(mousers), goats(kids-sell & milk & backpackers) , sheep(lambs-sell, wool & meat), chickens(eggs & meat), donkey(livestock guardian & cart), dog(family guardian). We have no animals that do not have a job/purpose. Then we started a small garden, and widen/added to it each year, then preserving food later. Just need patience, and a strong desire to live simple and reasonable. We love it!

Re: Enjoying the meat of our first homestead hog.

Thanks. Everyone always ask's how much did it cost? my response is that I'm going for quality not the cheapest meat I can buy. I love good homegrown organic meat and all food for that matter. YUM!!

Here's a link that sorts out the cost of raising your own pigs for meat. Hope you like it, I found it really interesting and informative. There were some handy graphs and calculations.
